In the summer of 2009, the Lakers were back. They had risen back to the top of the NBA, lead by Kobe Bryant, and everyone was out to get them. The Lakers added a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year in Ron Artest, hoping to get back to the NBA Finals for the third straight year. After roaring out to a 18-3 start, the Lakers cooled a bit but still finished with 57 wins and the number one seed in the West. Once the playoffs started, the Lakers faced the up-start Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. With the series tied at 2-2, the Lakers blew out the Thunder in game 5, and squeaked by in game 6 in OKC to survive. In the next round, the Lakers rode the momentum from the OKC series, sweeping the Utah Jazz in four games to face the Suns in the West Finals. With the series tied at 2-2 against the Suns, Ron Artest tipped in a buzzer-beater to win game 5, and eventually win game 6 in Phoenix. In the NBA Finals, the Lakers would face the Boston Celtics, the same team that blew them out two years ago in the 2008 NBA Finals. With revenge on their mind, the Lakers engaged the Celtics in a grueling seven game series, winning game seven at home to win their second consecutive NBA title. Kobe Bryant won NBA Finals MVP for the second straight season.
