The Mets started out the year last year 11-1, shocking the baseball world, and this Mets fan. However, we all know how the rest of the season played out, 66-84 the rest of the way, culminating in a subpar 77-85 record. The Mets opened their 2019 season out on the road, and ended up going 5-1, including sweeping the Marlins, before losing the home opener yesterday to the Nationals.
New additions Robinson Canó and Edwin Diaz made their impact immediately in game 1, but Canó has been quiet since. Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom was is usual self in his first start, going 6 strong and striking out 10 batters en-route to another opening day win for the Mets. deGrom continued his dominance again in his second start, and now has 24 strikeouts through two games 😲. The Mets other ace, Noah Syndergaard, has struggled a bit in his return from injury, but it’s early, and he’s throwing GAS … so that’s a good sign. Rookie slugger Pete Alonso has made an impact right away, leading the team in doubles and RBI’s early on!
Let’s take a look at how opening week played out for the NY Mets:

Fresh off of a new contract, Mets ace Jacob deGrom has already proved his worth on the mound … and in the batter’s box. In deGrom’s first two starts, he is 2-0 with 13 innings pitched, hasn’t given up a run, and leads the league with 24 strikeouts (14 coming on 4/3). In addition, deGrom is on a legendary run right now, just matching Bob Gibson’s Major League record of 26 straight quality starts (1967-68). His (deGrom’s) next start is scheduled for 4/10 against a rare appearance against the Twins.

While it’s hard to criticize Nimmo because of his contagious smile, I’m going to do it anyways 😂. His role as lead-off man has not panned out so far. Nimmo is 4th on the team with 30 plate appearances so far, but only has two hits to show for it. Nimmo is leading the team in walks early on (5), so he is showing patience at least, but the hits are not there yet.
